Chapter 01
The lot has to be clear before anyone arrives
Commercial clearing is not really a snow job, it is an opening time job. Whatever falls overnight has to be off the lot and off the walks before staff and customers turn up, which means the work happens in the dark and on somebody else's schedule.
The plan is made before the first flake. Where the snow gets pushed, where the piles go so they are not sitting in the disabled bays or blocking sightlines at the exit, and where the meltwater from those piles runs when it thaws and refreezes at four in the afternoon. Getting that wrong turns a cleared lot into a sheet of ice in the same day.

Plow, blow, or shovel
A lot, a sidewalk and a set of steps are three different tools. A plow moves volume across open ground fast. A blower handles walkways and tighter runs where a blade has nowhere to put what it takes. Steps, thresholds and anything up against a door are shovel work, and there is no shortcut.
The walk is the part that matters most and gets least attention. Almost nobody slips in the middle of a parking lot. They slip on the four feet between the kerb and your door.
Chapter 03
Salt is a temperature decision
Ordinary rock salt stops being much use as the temperature drops, and a Rockford January goes well past the point where it is doing anything at all. Spreading more of it at that point is just spreading grit.
Pre treating before a storm is a different job from clearing after one. It stops the first layer bonding to the surface, which means what falls afterwards comes off cleanly instead of having to be scraped.
We can use an eco friendly salt where run off, planting or concrete is a concern, which is worth asking about if you have beds, young trees or newer concrete anywhere near the lot.

This is the real argument for one contractor across the year. We already know where your kerbs are under that snow, where the drains are, which beds run right up to the tarmac, and where the sprinkler heads and lighting sit.
A plow operator who does not know any of that will find all of it, and you will discover which ones in April when the grass comes back and the edges do not.
